Ponte Brolla is a small village at the entrance of the Maggia Valley about a 15-minute drive or bus ride from Locarno. There are limited hotel options in the village itself, but there are more hotels in neighbouring Tegna and of course in Locarno on the shores of Lake Maggiore. If you want to stay in walking distance from our events in Ponte Brolla or Tegna we recommend booking early.
The following are a couple of available options:
AirBnbs / Vrbos: There are very cute holiday homes in the area as well as the aparthotel Alla Cantina that can also accommodate bigger groups if families want to stay together.
Local Hotels: There are several boutique hotels offering varying levels of comfort in the vicinity, including Hotel Al Fiume, Hotel Tre Terre, Hotel Barbatè. In Locarno you can also find a wider range of hotels, including lakefront locations amenities such as AC.
Hotel-Block Reservation: We don't have a standard room block, but we reserved a couple of rooms in the local hotels. Please contact us if you are interested in a room.
The Maggia Valley transports you from the mediterranean flair of Lake Maggiore to the steep ascents of the Swiss Alps. It is cut by a river flowing through dramatic granite cliffs and gorges and home to an exceptional cuisine. While staying in and around Ponte Brolla, we encourage you to explore and enjoy our favorite local activities and treats.
Swimming
The Maggia cuts a dramatic landscape of smooth gorges and beaches into the rock that has made the valley famous for cliff diving competitions. Whether you seek to tumble from the tall cliffs into one of the deep pools, swim through a the dramatic gorge, or just cool off in the cool mountain water there are different access points to the river either directly at Ponte Brolla or a short walk up the river.
Hiking
Follow the yellow hiking path signs and before you know it you will be going up the steep hillsides past the typical dry-stone houses to gain a spectacular view over the valleys and Lake Maggiore. For a 2h-round trip you could consider the Giro delle Rovine del Castelliere or take the bus up to Maggia for the 5h Giro della Valle del Salto. Reach out for more hiking ideas, including longer trips or stays at one of the nearby huts.
Regional Dishes
Risotto (it is going to be porcini season!!), polenta, local Amaro, pane Ticinese (a rustic round bread that comes in five connected pieces you pull apart by hand), formaggella (a soft mild local cheese made from goat or cow milk)
Restaurants
The typical local restaurant in Ticino is called a grotto and usually serves hearty local dishes often surrounded by dry stone masonry.
The Albergo Centovalli: Our favorite porcini gorgonzola risotto with home made concord grape sorbet (served "correto" with grappa)
Grotto America: A beautiful patio overlooking the Maggia valley gorge, with funky decor.
Grotto Pedemonte: A traditional grotto nearby, good for classic local dishes.
Groceries/Bakeries
Coop: the grocery store in Tegna village.
Panetteria-Pasticceria Peri Fausto: a proper bakery just a short walk away in neighboring Verscio.
